I had to do some research on Mr. Gissing.
First of all, I'm breaking my self-imposed rule not to read the works of white men to read this book, but it's a classic so I made an exception.
The thing is, his work was already out of print before he died. He had some major fans, including George Orwell.
I found this excellent article discussing Gissing's works. I've added the PDF of the article at the bottom of this post.
I think Gissing is quite the storyteller, created unique characters, and had a great grasp of the working life of the shop girls in
London at this time. I'd need a historian to back me up on that, but it feels like he's nailing the details.
I already want to read New Grub Street.
